How to play the Left Right game

  1. Everyone sits in a circle. Hand out a few small wrapped gifts, or one gift per person.
  2. One person reads the story out loud, not too fast.
  3. Every time the reader says LEFT, everyone passes the gift they are holding to the person on their left. RIGHT means pass to the right.
  4. When the story ends, you keep the gift you are holding. Unwrap it!

Tip for the reader: start slowly so everyone gets the idea, then speed up. The faster you read, the funnier it gets.

The story: read it aloud

Santa's Busy Sleigh Ride

On Christmas Eve, Santa checked his list twice and LEFT the workshop RIGHT on time. Mrs. Claus waved from the door and called, "Don't forget the sack you LEFT by the fireplace!" Santa turned RIGHT around, grabbed the sack and climbed back into his sleigh.

"Is everybody ready?" he asked. "RIGHT here!" shouted Dasher and Dancer. Prancer and Vixen nodded from the LEFT side, and Comet and Cupid stamped their hooves on the RIGHT. Donner and Blitzen were already flying, so off they went.

The first stop was a farmhouse on the LEFT. Santa slid down the chimney, filled the stockings and ate one cookie. All RIGHT, two cookies. Maybe three. He LEFT a thank-you note and hurried back up.

At the second house the GPS said, "Turn LEFT." Santa turned RIGHT. "Turn LEFT!" said the GPS again. Santa turned LEFT, then RIGHT, then LEFT again, until the reindeer were dizzy and Cupid had to land on a roof to catch his breath.

"We have only a few houses LEFT," said Santa, "so let's do this RIGHT." They zoomed past the school on the RIGHT, the church on the LEFT and a snowman who was waving with his LEFT arm, because his RIGHT arm had fallen off.

At the very last house a little girl was still awake. "I knew you would come RIGHT before midnight!" she whispered. Santa smiled, put a gift in her LEFT hand and a candy cane in her RIGHT, and tiptoed back to the sleigh.

Back at the North Pole there were no presents LEFT in the sack. Mrs. Claus had hot chocolate RIGHT on the table. Santa kicked off his boots, the LEFT one first, then the RIGHT one, and said, "That's the best Christmas yet."

And the gift you are holding RIGHT now? That one is yours to keep. Merry Christmas!
